Dahlias Organic .... 2011

Update 9/28/11 ... The 2011 season was a tough one.
I grew 42 dahlias in front of the ladies dome and struggled, as did everyone, with the extremely
dry period between June and September. Distributed another 150 or so tubers to several folks around
town who had varying degrees of sucess with them. Coupled with a late start, my plants were slow in
developing. Still, with timely irrigation (I use drip tape), most of them are in bloom and producing.
This despite a very early frost scare on the 14th of September where it got down to 36 degrees and
I had to cover them all up with plastic.

If you are looking for cut flowers, I'm afraid I simply don't have enough to sell this year. Fairfield residents should
check with Colleen Bell, who is selling cut flowers and bouquets, organically grown, including dahlias.

Note for folks stumbling on this website from out of town: Dahlias do not ship well. It's not impossible
to ship them, but they require special handling and packing, and it runs into money. If you can
tolerate non-organic cut dahlias, you might try Swan Island. Don't know what their deal is, but they have
in the past advertised a shipping service for their flowers.

Check back here next spring (2012) if you're looking for tubers.
